Bass Reflex vs Sealed vs Horn , Same 2 inch Speaker Test
This experiment clearly shows how much the enclosure can influence the sound of even a tiny and inexpensive full-range driver.
In one of the previous videos I presented the making of a miniature Horn type speaker box with a 2 inch full range driver. In fact, this box is a proportionally reduced version of the Fostex FE208NS 8 inch driver speaker box. There you could follow in detail the manufacturing method as well as its characteristics compared to a small NAD commercial speaker. Unfortunately, the result was far below my assumptions and expectations, so I decided to make two more different types of mini speaker boxes with the same driver, of course with dimensions according to well-known online calculators for this purpose. So, I decided to make both a BASS-Reflex type and a compression box with the appropriate volume and dimensions.

Now comes the most interesting part, which is a comparison of the sound characteristics of the three types of speakers placed one next to the other and driven by an identical audio signal. This way we will be able to feel the difference between them best. Especially for this purpose, I have created a small electronic project for switching the signal of the three speakers with appropriate LED signaling.

I will start with the Fostex miniature horn sound box, which honestly disappointed me the most. This box has a slight advantage over the other two in terms of the intensity of the sound especially around relatively high bass around 200Hz. The high tones are often lost under the influence of the previously mentioned amplified tones, and the deep bass is, in short, Disappointing. It feels completely unnatural and I would say like the knocking of a tin can, which is very unpleasant to listen to.
Next is the compression box. Relatively well-defined low bass but with weak intensity, moderate midrange, quality but not very pronounced, so the instruments sound a little neglected, and very weakly expressed high tones which is a consequence of the compression type of sound box which does not allow very short and fast movements of the membrane. Overall this sound box sounds better and cleaner than the previous one, of course with less sound intensity at the same input power.
And the third Bass Reflex type of speaker, which in this competition to my personal surprise is the absolute winner. It has all the good characteristics of the previous two. The deep bass is perfectly defined (do not take this literally because with such a small driver there can be no talk of any real deep bass), The punchy high bass is with strong intensity almost like in the Fostex box, and the midrange is particularly pronounced and clean and does not count on the treble part. Listening especially to instrumental music on this small speaker is a particular pleasure. The treble range is standardly good like in the Fostex box.
And finally I can say that each of these small sound boxes can find its place, that is, a listener. The mini fostex box is good in cases where a high level of sound pressure is needed from such a small speaker, the compression box gives a calm moderate sound at all frequencies, but sounds a little muffled and is good for quiet evening listening, and the bass reflex box sounds great with all types of musical material and I highly recommend it, at least as far as these cheap small speakers are concerned.
